Note

Press: "41 Years Ago Tonight - "The Zeppelin" Lands in Hampton"

September 9th, 1971, Led Zeppelin cruised into Hampton Roads. Some 8,000 fans rocked to the supergroup at Hampton Coliseum in a concert sponsored by WNOR radio.

Our reporter wrote that the group performed songs including a 25-minute rendition of “Dazed and Confused”. Zepp started off the concert with “Immigrant Song” and finished off with “Whole Lotta Love” – the latter lasting about 20 minutes. It was said Jimmy Page’s guitar performance that evening stole the show.

“Page seemed best on “What is”, although the last song, “Whole Lotta Love,” proved him one of the outstanding guitarists in the world today, perhaps the best since the death of Jimi Hendrix.”

As you can see in a few of the photos, it appears that an excited fan rushed the stage to hug Robert Plant. There was no mention of this in the reporting that accompanied these shots. Also, there are some shots from backstage where it looks like Plant mingles with some fans. The group granted no interviews that evening. (-Virginian-Pilot / hamptonroads.com. Sept. 2012)
