It was originally constructed in 1919 and was the first such permanent building for circus performances in Germany. On December 12, 1944, it was destroyed by bombing attacks. In 1950 it was re-constructed as a circus building with a seating capacity of 3,000 spectators.
The main arena has acted as a Munich concert venue, hosting bands like The Beatles and The Who in the 1960s, and Frank Zappa in the 1970s. It is seen on German television every year as the setting for the annual Stars in der Manege charity show, in which celebrities from fields such as music, television and sport perform classic circus acts in conjunction with circus professionals.
