Press Review: Led Zeppelin Concert Too Heavy For Three Hours

One thing you can say about England’s Led Zeppelin… they definitely give an audience its money’s worth. The band’s concert at the Municipal Auditorium Sunday night drew a crowd of Rolling Stones proportions – eleven thousand or more people, requiring heavy security.

Well, the Zep came on at six p.m. and played straight through with nary a break for three hours or so. This reviewer left half an hour early due to extreme sonic indigestion… the band just isn’t inventive enough or varied enough, to warrant three hours.

Zeppelin has been exploiting the same tired musical concepts for four or five years, venturing gingerly now and then into acoustic material, but it always ends with crashing cymbals and hot lead guitar.

So-called “heavy” music is, hopefully, a dying animal – by nature, it’s a limited field. Led Zeppelin is one of the last of that breed. And strangely enough, the band is more popular than ever.

The first ninety minutes of Zep’s show were, um, dull. They hit a peak with Stairway to Heaven, a reasonably complex, very lovely piece. Zep received a well-deserved round of applause.

Then the band went into the drummer’s showcase number, Moby Dick. There is no excuse in a civilized society for rock and roll drum solos… invariably they are dull, gratuitous and more than a little silly.

Still, Robert Plant is a fine vocalist, and the rest of the band is more than competent. Lighting was fantastix – excellent staging in all aspects. The show as at the very least, nice to look at. [–L.Moore / Mobile Register, May 1973]
