Press Review: Three and a half hours of Led Zeppelin
The English rock quartet, Led Zeppelin, last night played a very complete performance which in three and-a-half hours encompassed many of their old hard rock hits, an acoustic set, a 25 minute drum solo and several mid-50s rock ‘n roll numbers.
Last night’s concert at the Coliseum was sold out at least a week ahead, so a second advance performance was scheduled Sunday to satisfy the extra patronage.
Led Zeppelin’s show was led by the driving piercing guitar antics of for Yardbird, Jimmy Page. Lead singer Robert Plant was able to dominate the stage much of the time, with his howling blues voice and pelvic contortions.
Songs from their old albums and to-be-released record include: Black Dog, Heartbreaker, The Ocean, Stairway to Heaven and Rock and Roll.
During the acoustic set, Page strummed a folk guitar and bassist John Paul Jones played a mandolin and what looked like a foot operated organ. [bass pedals]
The crowd roared with stoned excitement when the group presented several surprises at the first conclusion and three encores that followed.
They played Whole Lotta Love which led into a medley of Hello Mary Lou, Roy Orbison’s Only the Lonely, and Heartbreak Hotel. The second encore opened with an organ solo which picked up rhythm until joined by the group on Louie, Louie and Let’s Dance.
For the third encore, a very tired Led Zeppelin started with Money, and ended with Over the Hills and Far Away, and Dancing Days, both from the new album. [-D.Smith, 6-20-72]
